The Brain, or Brain for short, is one of the main characters of the Animaniacs franchise, serving as the anti-heroic main antagonist of the original series and its reboot, one of the major characters of Wakko's Wish, and one of the two titular main protagonists (alongside Pinky) of its spinoff Pinky and the Brain and Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain. He's an intelligent, and megalomaniacal gene spliced lab mouse that harbors a long-lasting desire to take over the world. He is often annoyed by his companion Pinky's dim-witted thoughts and actions, although he is shown to really care for him. He has clearly shown he cares deeply for Pinky even going as far as giving up the world for him on multiple occasions, although he struggles to admit how much he really means to him. He often thinks of complicated plans to take over the world. He strongly believes he can make the world a better place and that only he is intelligent enough to. In “You'll Never Eat Food Pellets In This Town Again”, Brain has a wife named Sheila who apparently plays Billie. However, this episode was meant to joke on the WB's petty executives. Brain is heavily based on Orson Welles, in both how he speaks and how he looks. At one point he even tried to copy Orson's infamous radio telling of War of the Worlds.

Brain came into being as an ordinary mouse, but he was imprisoned by scientists. He began bonding with a hamster named Snowball. However, after they were critically injured, both of them were experimented on against their will by scientists, and their genes were spliced during an experiment. Brain's eyes became red, his tail became rigid, and he became capable of speech and developed an incredibly high Intelligence Quotient. However, his early experiences embittered him, leaving him with one goal, to "try to" supplant politicians and rule the world unopposed. Snowball received the exact same mutations, but unlike Brain, who never wanted to rule the world alone, Snowball refused to share power; the two became each other's nemesis as a result.

Pinky, who received similar mutations, but had little of Brain's intelligence, befriended him. The two began engaging in several schemes together, with Brain doing the thinking and Pinky carrying out several physical tasks, beginning with an (ultimately botched) attempt to put serum in pancakes, but they continually failed for a variety of reasons. In spite of his immense intelligence, Brain often tended to miss a fatal flaw or makes a small mistake that causes the plan to completely fail. Though he never admitted fault and had a habit of blaming and deploring Pinky for his failed attempts at world domination, (not that the immaturity of the latter had helped any) he genuinely cared for him and displays it at times. There are a few occasions that have been completely out of his control, reasons why his plans don't work.

The closest he ever got to world domination was the Christmas special, he had managed to use Santa Claus to deliver mind control dolls to every home in the world, however when he was about to give the signal through the dolls, Pinky's kindness towards him despite how he treats Pinky overtook him and instead he ordered the world to have a merry Christmas before breaking into sobs.

In Wakko's Wish, After the Warners retake the throne, he becomes their royal advisor and the Prime Minister. In the end, he planned to take over the kingdom and the world in the sequel. However, there was no sequel to the film.

Pinky and the Fog

Personality[]

Brain is rather sarcastic and grumpy at times, but he has a soft, and tender heart. He at times seems emotionless and uncaring but shows sides of affection and care and doesn't go out of his way to screw over others in his quest for domination. He seems to simply believe he is the best at everything, of superior intelligence, and that he deserves to rule the world. He often comments on how great and intelligent he is, and enjoys an audience, as many of his attempts to take over the world involve putting on some type of show or becoming well known and famous. In Brain's Song[1] he admits he has "detached from his emotions," and tries to get Pinky to do so as well by showing him sad films and training him not to cry. He refers to emotions as "the bane of our existence." However soon after, he ends up crying alongside Pinky from empathy towards the character in the sad film.

He has shown an intention to be a benevolent world leader when he agrees to Pinky that the Constitution is good to follow, but that of course he is allowed to temporarily break it in order to get into power. He also genuinely enjoys playing different acting roles while trying to trick and manipulate the world into giving him power, and he gets Pinky to dress up and be an accomplice in the act. He has a soft spot for Pinky although he often gets aggravated at Pinky and says he's going to have to hurt him. Pinky and Brain have a close bond that even borders on romantic, although Brain isn't one to show emotion and/or affection. Brain was based off of famous actors Orson Welles and Vincent Price.

Why does he always fail to take over the world?[]

All of Brain's attempts to take over the world fail. There is more than one reason for this. Sometimes, he realizes a flaw in his plan that he should have realized earlier, such as in “Opportunity Knox”, where he forgot that gold is extremely heavy. Other times, Pinky screws things up, such as in “Brain Meets Brawn”, when he apologized to Brain after making a mistake. And on very rare occasions it Brain willingly giving up the world, although this has only ever been for pinky such as in "A Pinky and the Brain Christmas" or "A Pinky and the Brain Halloween". On other occasions, it's neither one of them, but something else that causes him to fail.
